District considers cutting registered nurses from schools

Published: Updated:

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – The school board is discussing if it will cut the amount of nurses across the district. Instead, leaders want to add more nursing assistants.

There are 48 schools in the Collier County School district.

WINK News uncovered that only 13 of them have a full-time nurse on staff.  The other schools have an assigned nurse and trained clinic staff.

Now, depending on how board members vote, the district may reduce the amount of nurses even more.

Right now,
The district employs:
17 Registered Nurses
13 Licensed Practical Nurses
5   School Health Assistants

The new proposal would employ:
15 Registered Nurses
11 Licensed Practical Nurses
15 School Health Assistants.

District officials say this will help schools have increased coverage and save about $160,000. But, the move would mean there would only be one registered nurse in the district for about every 3,000 students.

The National Association of School Nurses recommends that number be one nurse for every 750 students.

The Collier County School Board will hear recommendations on the new proposal at their board meeting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
