Cat island off the coast of Japan

Published: Updated:

Aoshima Island, JAPAN-  Cats literally rule the world on a remote island off of Southern Japan. The cats on the island of Aoshima outnumber humans six to one.

With no restaurants, cars or shops selling snacks, Aoshima is no typical tourist haven. The allure of cats is enough for most of the visitors.

The cats survive on rice balls, energy bars and potatoes that are given to them from tourists. Most of the tourists are from Tokyo because many residents can’t have pets due to strict housing regulations.
