FORT MYERS, Fla.- On Monday, authorities conducted an operation along McGregor Boulevard to specifically target a recent trend of burglaries from unlocked vehicles.

Bennie Richardson, 19, was arrested and is now facing multiple charges including vehicle burglary and resisting arrest without violence.

Around 12:30 a.m., officials spotted a suspect wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt walk up to a vehicle parked in a driveway on Stadler Drive.

Officers could see the dome light turn on and the suspect bent over inside the vehicle on the passenger side.

When police surrounded the car, the suspect immediately ran from the vehicle. An officer was able to identify the suspect as Richardson through prior contacts.

Officials set up a perimeter while other officers went to Richardson’s nearby residence, anticipating his return home. Police say Richardson showed up at his residence and ran from officers again.

Richardson was later taken into custody after he jumped the fence into the City of Fort Myers Fire Station #3, located at 1915 Jefferson Avenue.

According to authorities, at the time of his arrest, Richardson had black knit gloves, a knit cap, flashlight and bandana style mask.
