Schools celebrate Read Across America with guest readers

CAPE CORAL, Fla – Schools all over Southwest Florida are celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss with Read Across America events.

Read Across America began in 1998 as a way to motivate children to read.  Research has shown that children who spend more time reading do better in school.  The event was created by the National Education Association.

WINK News Anchor Lois Thome was among a dozen community leaders invited to participate in the Read Across America event at Trafalgar Elementary in Cape Coral on Friday.  Thome read fiction and humorous poetry to Mrs. Sardinas’ 3rd graders.

Many other schools in Southwest Florida will be holding Read Across America events over the coming days and weeks.
