LEE COUNTY, Fla.- The freeway linking I-75 to Southwest Florida International Airport will be ready for traffic at the beginning of March.

That update came straight from Governor Rick Scott who spoke at a news conference at the airport Wednesday.

The governor said Southwest Florida, along with the rest of the state, can’t grow unless they invest in transportation.

Work on the $54 million project first started in 2012 and is now just days from completion.

An estimated 15,000 cars are expected to use the new connector every day.

Governor Scott, who frequently flies in and out of RSW, says he can’t wait for it to open.

“This connector is going to be very significant to this airport, as we see more and more traffic come through here, 7.9 million passengers last year, 1.5 million passengers last March, and hopefully this March and April we’ll have record traffic again,” said Scott.

The connector will help alleviate a lot of the traffic congestion in out of the airport and the airport staff is very excited for what March will bring.
