New details: Family of man found dead in Lehigh Acres says there’s more to the story

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- On Monday, WINK News spoke to the family of Gary Helms.

They say their loved one was stabbed to death.

Lee County deputies found Helms dead last Wednesday. They handed the case over to Major Crimes.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says this is still a death investigation, and would not comment further.

Helms’ family reached out to WINK News, saying they wanted to share their side of the story.

Helms was living in a home on Gunby Drive home with his girlfriend, Anita Borcher.

Last week, Borcher’s family says Anita killed Helms in self-defense. But Helms’ family disagrees.

“We want to speak for Gary. He’s not here to speak for himself. We know Gary did not want to die that night,” said his sister.

WINK News confirmed, there is a history of domestic violence in the home. Deputies have been called out there 12 times in the past.

The medical examiner confirms it is a criminal investigation but no one has said Borcher is being treated as a suspect.
