Naples police officer involved in shooting could receive settlement

NAPLES, Fla.- WINK News has learned the $140,000 settlement being offered to a Naples police sergeant that was injured in a domestic shooting with her boyfriend last summer, will not affect the hiring of other officers.

The city manager says it will come from vacancy savings.

In addition to the settlement, Sgt. Amy Young could receive $42,000 a year in disability pay and pension if approved by the city’s pension board.

Chairman of the board Joe Whitehead tells WINK News it’s premature to jump to any conclusions.

“I don’t think that anyone should make any guesses or judgements or predictions on what’s going to happen because we haven’t even seen the application yet. We haven’t seen any documentation yet so what we all need to do is step back and let the process happen,” said Whitehead.

There will be a special meeting Tuesday where City Council is being asked to approve Young’s settlement.

She will then have to apply for any pension benefits.

Young, a 14 year veteran, has already signed an agreement which includes her leaving the police force and not suing the city in the future.
