Chris Sale’s number retired at FGCU

ESTERO, Fla.- Former FGCU baseball player and Chicago White Sox pitcher, Chris Sale, became the first student-athlete at FGCU to have his number retired.

At halftime at the men’s basketball game Saturday night, his former coach, the university and the fans honored Sale by retiring his jersey at center court. They unveiled his jersey in front of a packed house at Alico Arena.

Sale is one of just six players ever to play in the big leagues the same year he was drafted. Number 41 will never be worn again by a baseball player on the FGCU team.

“A lot of things went into the person that I evolved into,” Sale told WINK Sports. “I owe this school a lot. That’s why I smile people think I do a lot for the school; they’ve done more for me than I can ever think of.”
