FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fort Myers Police have confirmed 45-year-old Malcolm Huggins was shot and killed by his neighbor Saturday.

It happened in the 3100 block of Price Avenue. Police responded to a call of gunshots fired at 12:19 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Huggins suffering from gunshot wounds. Police say he died on scene.

37-year-old Reginald L. Mitchell has been arrested.

Jimmy Roumph said he was with Huggins when the shooting happened.

“I don’t think they were enemies or anything of that type, that I know of. I haven’t heard no rumors that they were beefing or had animosity between each other,” Roumph said. “The guy just came up, we were just talking football. All of a sudden the guy just came up, just came up and shot him for no apparent reason. There was no argument, they never exchanged words or nothing.”

Roumph said Huggins was a youth football coach.

“It’s a very sad situation because you don’t expect that from your neighbor. You expect your neighbor to be friendly, kind, lovely, caring, you know what I mean joyful. So for that to happen, that’s whats so amazingly shocking about this.”

“The ensuing investigation along with several eyewitness accounts of the shooting in the victim’s front yard led to the arrest charges,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Victor Medico. “The investigation remains active as detectives continue to look into the motive for the offense.”

Crime scene technicians from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating. Lee County Domestic Animal Services was also summoned to remove a dog that was in the home.

Mitchell faces charges of second degree murder, improper exhibition of a firearm and discharging a firearm in public.
