FMB considers changes for street performers applying for permits

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Pirates, living statues, magicians entertain crowds at the beach, but soon a knife thrower will join with group.

The act caused some controversy. Town leaders say they’re sure it’s safe. WINK News found out, beach performers must go through backgrounds checks and now the town is considering strengthening requirements for acts.

Town council approved street performers like Calico Jack the balloon making pirate, this living statue, or this magician, to entertain at Times Square on Fort Myers Beach.

“It reminds me of Mallory Square in Key West.”

“I have a variety of things I’ve been doing for 20 years, that works real well,” said Captain Calico Jack.

Council just approved a new act. Knife tossing and fire throwing, will be the new attraction in Times Square.

“We have seen different performances like that and the performers are very safety conscious,” said visitor Sharon Peterson.

The Mayor voted against the knife throwing act and wants to take a closer look at the background of all people who perform on the beach. Right now, Entertainers must pay $100.00 to the town to conduct a background check in order to get a permit. Approved performers wear an official badge. Next month, town leaders will talk about changes to approving or denying performers.

“Maybe if you had a misdemeanor, you shouldn’t be declined, depending on when it happened, we need to take those things into consideration,” said Vice Mayor Dan Andre.

Captain Calico Jack says with so many people at the beach, safety is a priority.

“We all need to abide by the rules the town sets up.”

There will not be a vote next month on what changes, if any, will be made regarding street performers applications. It is just a discussion to talk about different ideas.
