FORT MYERS, Fla.- Winkler Avenue near Metro Parkway is back open after a head-on collision sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries.

It happened shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, and the crash snarled traffic for hours.

Authorities say a silver vehicle was traveling westbound on Winkler Avenue when the driver crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a dark gray car head on.

A Fort Myers Police officer swerved to avoid the crash, landed in a ditch, and hit a water pipe. The officer was not injured.

The drivers of the other vehicles were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A witness tells WINK News the driver of the silver car appeared to be in worse shape.

“Turned the corner and looked and just saw smoke. I saw the guy laying in the street, he was hurt, he looked hurt bad,” said Eric Martir.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the single car crash involving the police officer. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the head-on collision.
