Dozens show up for free, same-sex weddings

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A local church offered mass same-sex weddings for free on Sunday.

All Faiths Unitarian Church on McGregor Boulevard offered the ceremonies to all walk-in same-sex couples.

“We met in Fort Myers 40 years ago. So we’ve been waiting a long time,” said Bill, who asked we only use his first name. “It feels great to have the same benefits as heterosexual couples do and we waited a long time for this day to come.”

This Sunday was the first Sunday same sex couple could legally marry in Florida under the new law.

“Today finally they’re able to make legal what should’ve been a legal decades ago,” said Rev. Dr. Wayne Robinson. “And so we celebrate in the legal sense, but we also celebrate the love and relationship they have.”

Same-sex marriages in Florida have been banned since 1977. Additionally, there had been a statue prohibiting the recognition of marriages from other jurisdictions since 1997. However, those laws are now history.

The church offered free marriages from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The church will offer free marriage services to all LGBTQ couples for the rest of January.
