The Volusia County Council directed staff on Thursday to draft an ordinance that would double daily beach access fees from $5 to $10. It is the first time in nearly two decades they’ve raised beach fees. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the new law would also increase annual passes for Volusia County residents from $20 to $25 and raise nonresident rates for annual passes to $100. The current price is $40. The new ordinance will likely come before the council on Feb. 5. County manager Jim Dineen says the increase would lessen taxpayer burden. The new revenue would bring in about $4.2 million of the $10.5 million it costs to maintain the beaches.
