DELAND, Fla. (AP) – Officials in Volusia County are set to double fees to drive on the beach.

The Volusia County Council directed staff on Thursday to draft an ordinance that would double daily beach access fees from $5 to $10. It is the first time in nearly two decades they’ve raised beach fees.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the new law would also increase annual passes for Volusia County residents from $20 to $25 and raise nonresident rates for annual passes to $100. The current price is $40.

The new ordinance will likely come before the council on Feb. 5.

County manager Jim Dineen says the increase would lessen taxpayer burden. The new revenue would bring in about $4.2 million of the $10.5 million it costs to maintain the beaches.
