Dr. Mackoul talks flu season

Published: Updated:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Following warning from the CDC that this flu season is set to be a particularly harsh one, the organization’s latest influenza surveillance report states that this year’s flu season has now crossed the epidemic threshold.

Dr. Annette St. Pierre-Mackoul sat down with WINK News anchor Jen Stacy to discuss the flu.

Right now, there are several organizations recommending the flu vaccine, including; but not limited to, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the National Institute of health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Health officials say H3N2 is the culprit of this year’s strain. It’s the most severe strain of the flu, and it has the highest mortality rate ever. Health professionals still say the vaccine vital, because more strains of influenza could be coming.
