FORT MYERS, Fla.- A garbage truck went up in flames on a busy road Wednesday.

It happened on Colonial Boulevard near Six Mile Cypress around noon.

The fire completely blocked eastbound traffic, including drivers headed to the on-ramp to I-75.
With several pops and a boom, Frank Wood and his son Nicholas, watched the garbage truck burn.

“Initially when we heard the explosion, people said get to the ground, we thought some one was possibly shooting in the parking lot,” said Wood.

Frank tells WINK they were sitting at the Steak and Shake  across the street, at Six Mile and Colonial.

They say the scene was dangerous.

“As explosions were coming, pieces of debris were flying across the street on to oncoming traffic,” said Wood.

But that didn’t stop Frank from getting closer.

“The heat, the heat was pretty strong, even across the street, and with things starting to fly, really crazy,” said Wood.

The road has since re-opened.

Authorities say the driver of the garbage truck got out safely, but they have not said what caused the fire.
