LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- Authorities confirm one person is dead after a fire burned down a home. Firefighters responded to the duplex on Westminster Street, near Homestead Road, around 3 p.m. Neighbors say an elderly man lived alone in the home. Neighbors sprung in to action and tried to save anyone who was inside the home. “I went to the front door, trying to open it up, went to the back door trying to open the back door and it was locked,” said neighbor Dennis Vickers. Vickers eventually broke a window to see if anyone was inside. Once firefighters arrived, they found a man dead inside the home. “I can’t believe it because I just talked to him last night,” said close friend Dee Gissendanner. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
