COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- It was an emotional morning for a Southwest Florida soldier. Staff Sargent Edward Hughes was given a Christmas gift that wasn’t on his list. It came by a surprise visit from local law enforcement and fire fighters.

“It just touches my heart that there are people out there who are willing to be that brave to take care of us,” said Big Corkscrew Island firefighter John Hart.

It was a Christmas gift that can’t be bought in a store. One, that you can’t put a price tag on.

“It’s all kind of a haze, I am just in complete shock,” said Staff Sargent Edward Hughes. “The fact that these great gentlemen took time away from their work or families to be here for me and my family is amazing.”

Big Corkscrew Island Firefighters, the North Naples Honor Guard and law enforcement in Collier County along with service members saluted an American flag that would be presented to the soldier.

“I looked at the soldier and I saw his lip quiver a little bit, I’m emotional, and it touched me,” Hart told WINK News.

But, this flag has a story.

“It’s going to be a keepsake forever,” said Staff Sargent Hughes.

It was raised and flown at the war memorial at Freedom Park in Naples in honor of Staff Sargent Hughes.

“That flag is what we stand for everyday,” said Hughes.

The heartfelt moment came when Staff Sargent Hughes’ daughter gave him a salute.

“Just utter pride that I mean so much to her.”

It was another Christmas surprise, he wasn’t expecting to get, one that brought him to tears.

“I saw her in uniform over by the trucks, just sheer shock and surprise that she was part of this and was able to get one over on me.”

This wounded warrior was injured in an IED blast in Iraq in 2006. He was left unconscious for 14 hours.

“They are mostly injuries you don’t see.”

He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service time on the battle field.

“It was very special to meet somebody who was there on the front lines protecting us.”

This year, it’s obvious Santa delivered in a big way. The surprise is proof the best gifts don’t need to wrapped up and placed under a tree and it shows a little love goes a long way.

“I’m in shock, just in awe.”

Staff Sargent Hughes served 18 years in the military.
Last Christmas, Big Corkscrew Island firefighters surprised Specialist Cody Chasteen just weeks after he got back from deployment, he was also there for Thursday’s surprise.
