Lee Memorial penalized for not meeting ACA standards

Published: Updated:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee Memorial Hospital is in trouble with the federal government. The health system is not making the grade when it comes to preventable complications for patients.

A spokeswoman tells WINK News the hospital will be penalized more than $800,000 dollars in Medicare reimbursements for 2015.

The Affordable Care Act created standards to help hospitals prevent patients from getting sick while they are in the hospital’s care.

According to our partners at The News-Press, there are 30 other hospitals across the state that are being penalized for not meeting those standards.

Lee Memorial Health System is the only one in Southwest Florida.

Lee Memorial spokeswoman Mary Briggs says they’re doing a number of things to fix the problems, including:

boosting the use of our electronic health records to identify patient risks before they become serious, and to avoid medication errors.
