FORT MYERS, Fla.- A family is awoken to the sounds of an explosion early Sunday morning, when their garage catches fire. The fire started around 3 a.m. in the 6000 block of Magnolia Lane, just off Plantation Road. John Joyce said he and his family were sleeping when it broke out. “It’s was very loud, shook the house a little bit. It woke me up out of a sleep. Within minutes we figured out what was up, we called the fire department and got outside getting away from the house,” Joyce said. Fortunately, no one was injured; however, Joyce said the fire destroyed three cars in his garage and melted another car sitting just a few feet away. South Trail firefighters said oil inside the garage did ignite at some point, spreading the flames. “They [fire fighters] were as quick as I could possibly hope they could be out there. Had it been much longer, with the heat that was coming off, it would have jumped to the next vehicle, and then into the house,” he said. “We’re just blessed that the house is not damaged and more importantly no one was hurt. We can’t thank South Trail enough for coming out and saving the day.” Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
